How to Sand Stainless Steel in 5 Steps

Stainless steel is celebrated for its sleek, modern look, perfect for kitchens and outdoor areas. Despite its durability, it’s not entirely scratch-resistant. A minor scratch can mar its pristine appearance, but don’t worry—most scratches can be easily sanded out. At Steel and Pipe Supply, we’ll guide you through the process of restoring your stainless steel to its original shine.

How to Sand Stainless Steel in 5 Steps

First, note that this method is suitable only for plain, uncoated stainless steel. To check if your stainless steel is coated, perform the fingerprint test. If it leaves a print easily, your steel is likely uncoated.

The secret to sanding out a scratch is to focus on the scratch itself, gradually blending it into the surrounding area.

Materials

Before you start, gather these supplies. Alternatively, you can purchase a stainless steel sanding kit that includes everything you need:

  • 400 to 600-grit sandpaper or an abrasive pad
  • Sanding block
  • Sanding fluid

Directions

Step 1: Apply Sanding Fluid

  • Start by applying sanding fluid to the area you intend to sand.

Step 2: Identify the Grain Direction

  • Determine the direction of the grain and sand only in that direction—never against the grain or up and down.

Step 3: Choose the Right Grit

  • Begin with the finest grit sandpaper you have. If the scratch persists, move to a coarser grit after a few minutes.

Step 4: Blend the Scratch

  • Once the scratch is gone, sand the rest of the panel to blend the sanded area seamlessly with the surrounding surface.

Step 5: Polish the Surface

  • After sanding, apply a stainless steel polish or cleaner to restore the finish.

It might take some practice to perfect the sanding technique, so start with an inconspicuous area of the appliance to refine your skills.
