ASTM A500 vs. A53
Bottom line: A500 is a structural tubing specification; A53 is a pipe specification. Similar outside dimensions do not make structural HSS and standard pipe interchangeable.
| Decision factor | Option A | Option B |
|---|---|---|
| Primary product | Structural tubing/HSS | Standard pipe |
| Sizing convention | Outside dimensions and wall | Nominal pipe size/schedule |
| Common use | Structural frames, columns, fabricated structures | Mechanical/pressure/general pipe; also used structurally when specified |
How to choose
Do not substitute one material for another only because the dimensions look similar. The governing specification, design assumptions, service environment, fabrication method, coating, pressure/load requirements and owner or engineer approvals control the final choice.
Send a cleaner RFQ
Send both the required specification and the performance/application requirements if substitutions are being considered.
Reference starting point: AISC structural-shape resources and current ASTM specifications. Always verify the current governing standard, approved project specification and manufacturer documentation before final procurement.
