Steel Gauge Reference

Reference Guide

Steel Gauge Reference

Gauge numbers are used for some sheet and wire products, but a gauge number is not a universal thickness across every material or product system.

What to consider

  • Identify the material and applicable gauge system before converting gauge to thickness.
  • For purchasing, decimal thickness is clearer when the project allows it.
  • Do not assume steel, galvanized steel, stainless and nonferrous gauge numbers share identical thickness values.
  • Verify the project specification and current supplier dimensional data.

How to request material

For the fastest quote, send the exact material description, dimensions, grade/specification if known, quantity, required processing, delivery or pickup requirements, and the date the material is needed. Drawings, cut lists and project specifications reduce ambiguity.

Availability and sourcing

Steel & Pipe Supply carries stock material and can source additional products through its distribution network. A product appearing in this resource library does not mean every size or grade is physically stocked in Tampa. Current price, manufacturer, availability and lead time are confirmed against the actual request.
