Pipe vs. Tube
Pipe and tube are not interchangeable naming conventions. Pipe is commonly specified by nominal pipe size and schedule, while tube is commonly specified by outside dimensions and wall thickness.
What to consider
- Use the terminology shown on the drawing or equipment specification.
- Tubing is common in structural, mechanical and fabricated assemblies.
- Pipe is common in process, utility, structural and bollard applications.
- Dimensions, tolerances, grades and testing requirements differ by governing product standard.
